ChatENG

Graphic Designer 2023-present

ChatENG is a language learning company that enhances fluency and fosters global citizenship through virtual lessons delivered by instructors from around the world.

Overview

ChatENG is a remote language learning company with lesson plans created by teachers. My task as a graphic designer is to take these frameworks and design lessons that are clear, engaging, and consistent with ChatENG's branding language.

Clarity

Clear, legible information is essential to language learning. I paid careful attention to color contrast, font sizes, and image clarity to make information easy to read.

Consistency

I maintained a consistent visual language across a wide range of languages and lesson formats.

Diversity

I paid attention to cultural diversity while selecting clipart and photos for different languages, and worked closely with native speakers to maintain accuracy.

Engagement

I incorporated interactive activities for students within lessons and take-home assignments to help them engage with the material.

Color coding

To make different language lessons easily differentiable at a glance, I used different accent colors for each language family. Each color was chosen to mesh well with the other ChatENG brand colors.

Language maps

Instead of using country flags to represent each language, I created maps to indicate the countries in which the language is commonly spoken. This helped avoid the problem of choosing one country to represent a language like Arabic or Spanish, which are spoken in many countries.

Adapting to each language

Each language is different, and creating lessons across multiple languages means adapting to those differences. I used common graphic elements in different ways to account for things like gendered words and different levels of formality while maintaining a consistent aesthetic.
